There are many wonderful filming locations all over the United Kingdom, but few can compare to the beauty of Northampton. Whether you’re looking for historic architecture or natural scenery, you’ll find it all in this charming town located in the heart of England.
Check out our list of five of the most beautiful filming locations in Northampton to get started on your next production!
1) The River Nene
The River Nene meanders through Northampton and is the slowest-moving river in England. It flows along a broad valley, formed in the Ice Age, and benefits from dramatic backdrops pretty much all the way along. The Nene is so picturesque in 2016, composer Benjamin Till wrote a major orchestral and choral work inspired by it which was performed by 800 musicians at the Royal Albert Hall the following year.
2) The Althorp Estate
Best known as the final resting place of Diana, Princess of Wales, Althorp has been held by the Spencer family for more than 500 years. The 13,000-acre grounds provide a sumptuous variety of backdrops, including lakes, tree-lined terraces and sweeping open spaces. The magnificent Grade 1 listed Althorp House has been used in a number of films, including, most recently, Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
3) Abington Park
Abington Park is an excellent place for videography in Northampton. With its beautiful natural scenery and historic buildings, it’s a location where any photographer or videographer would find something irresistible to shoot. The park includes a lake that can be used as a dramatic backdrop for outdoor shoots. With large patches of greenery and scenic views, this is one of Northampton’s most popular filming locations.
4) Market Square
Northampton’s Market Square is a popular spot for filmmakers. It is conveniently located near the railway station and comprises an elegant square with a large fountain in the centre. The Market Square is surrounded by shops and is always busy with locals going about their daily errands. For videographers in Northampton, this provides not just an aesthetic backdrop but also a great opportunity to capture the real-life hustle and bustle of a market square as part of their film.
5) Across the town
Popular sitcom Keeping Up Appearances was filmed in Northampton. Parts of the 2005 film Kinky Boots were made in the town and featured shots of the statue outside the Grosvenor Centre in the town centre. And the greenhouse at Castle Ashby Gardens, just outside Northampton, doubles as part of Riza’s Castle in 2019’s Men in Black: International.
